On Friday 22nd March, We were joined by Kate Slesinger, Publishing Director at Tatler and Vanity Fair and Tori Cadogan, Education Editor at Tatler, for the final assembly in this spring’s Women of Influence Lecture Series.

Kate and Tori began by sharing with us their career journeys. Kate had begun by studying Medieval Literature and Language at university before taking on a role in advertising, but it was not until she was in New York that she realised she wanted to enter fashion journalism. Having gained experience as a Fashion PR she sort out an interview with the head guy and Vogue and the rest was history. Tori, on the other hand, always knew she wanted to go into journalism and spent many years after university working in the BBC’s news teams. She joined Tatler after she pitched an article to them about Dyslexia in education.

They then went on to share with us some top tips about breaking into journalism – be polite, take work placements, don’t despise the small tasks – and debunking some of the myths perpetuated by films like The Devil Wears Prada. Kate and Tori left is in no doubt that this is a career in which you need to work hard and be resilient, but could also be loads of fun and really rewarding.
