In collaboration with FTI Consulting, the Computing Department hosted a successful women in tech event, placing a spotlight on the exciting field of data science. Hosted by guest speakers Nathalie Baker, Afreen Kansal, Emily Rowe, and Taranya Elangovan from FTI Consulting, our UIV students were treated to an inspiring morning filled with insights and expert knowledge in Data & Analytics, Forensic & Litigation.
The event kicked off with our guest speakers sharing their expertise, which igniting a spark of curiosity into big data. They then had the opportunity to engage in a lively Q&A session, ensuring each student had their voices heard. This was followed by a practical session where students put their Python skills to the test as they analysed a large dataset before impressing the judges with their presentations.
The quality of their presentations left the judges struggling to pick a winner but in the end, they awarded the wireless headphone prizes to Aida, Alice, Ami and Arianna.
They also commended the effort and presentation delivery to runners-up Alice, Annie, Daphne and Eden. All participants received a well-deserved certificate of achievement for their remarkable efforts and contributions in the event.
Senior Director in Data Science at FTI Consulting and one of our judges, Nathalie Baker said about the event,
āWe were very impressed at the creativity of the girls. Hopefully, we inspired at least a few to consider a career in data as there was definitely a lot of talent in the room.ā
This event was not just a competition but a celebration of the potential and opportunities that lie ahead in the tech industry, particularly in data science. It was heartening to see our girls inspired and motivated by the prospects of a career in tech.
Reflecting on the event, the head of the Computing Department Mr El Moudden said,
“The women in tech event at Francis Holland showcased the incredible spirit shown in embracing new challenges and pushing the boundaries of what they thought was possible. The perseverance seen today as they tackled complex problems, reflects their deep engagement and understanding of Computing and other STEM subjects. Most importantly, they showed compassion as they worked with new teams, supported one another and celebrated each other’s successes.ā
We would also like to extend my sincerest gratitude to the Senior Managing Director at FTI Consulting, Nick Hourigan for making the event possible and look forward to creating more of these opportunities for our students next year.
