Dr. Downhill took a group of Upper Fourth pupils to Speakers’ Corner in Hyde Park for an opportunity to speak out about important current affairs (they brought along their very own stool to stand on!).

It was wonderful to see our pupils speak so confidently and passionately about issues they care about such as, development within cities, the meat industry, and rainbow capitalism. We will be taking another group next Thursday! Below are a few words from one our Upper Fourth pupils who attended.

“On Thursday last week, I went with four other members of my class to Speakers’ Corner. After the journey, Sher made a speech about rainbow capitalism. It was very illuminating and brought up many points that I hadnā€™t considered when it came to the issue.

After Sher spoke, I gave an improvised speech about why I think that it is better to reuse brown sites in urban and suburban areas for development rather than destroy uncompromised wooded and green sites. After me, my classmate Maia spoke about the reasons why she believes that vegetarianism is a much more ecologically friendly lifestyle. She told me things I didnā€™t know and almost convinced me to go vegetarian! I think that it was very important that I went to Speakers’ Corner. I practiced my rights to free speech and spoke at a historical landmark.”
