The History Department took the entire Upper Fourth to visit the First World War battlefields in Belgium and France for three days.

We visited a range of fascinating sites including the ‘In Flanders Fields’ museum, a number of Commonwealth and German cemeteries, and several battlefields around both Ypres and the Somme. This year we were pleased to be able to go back to our favourite memorial at Vimy Ridge as it was shut for restoration last year – it is a very beautiful and moving spot. We also attended the Last Past ceremony at the Menin Gate.

We stayed in Ypres and enjoyed shopping for chocolate and visiting the funfair.

The trip was a great success and special thanks should be given to the Upper Fourth for their enthusiasm, interest, and good behaviour throughout. They were a pleasure to be with!
