We are so excited to announce that FHS’s Team REMI has won the Innovation Award for Years 7-9 at the 2023 PA Consulting Raspberry Pi Competition, a national competition celebrating excellence in STEM education!
After months of developing their product, our intrepid Year 8 inventors – Carmen L, Gabriella C, Smrithi S, Emilie P and Anisha R – reached the finals with their innovative ‘Room Environment Monitor Infobot’ or REMI , for short. The theme of this annual competition was to help accelerate the energy transition to support overall sustainability and climate response goals, and over 200 teams across the UK entered this year. Students are tasked with using their coding skills, their engineering skills and a Raspberry Pi Microcomputer to invent sustainability-led products. Team REMI uniquely addressed this theme by aiming to reduce the school’s energy use, making running FHS more sustainable. To achieve this, REMI measures a classroom’s temperature and light level and warns the user when levels are above a certain threshold.
During the finals on Wednesday 3rd May, Team REMI presented their invention to a senior expert judging panel. Their performance with the judges was spectacular! They answered their question calmly and professionally, showing a high level of expertise and an abundance of enthusiasm. They also participated in a ārace to ingenuityā challenge (building their own race car), took part in a speed networking session with business leaders and enjoyed meeting fellow engineers from schools across the UK. It was a fantastic event, and the outcome was brilliant. Well done Team REMI for displaying such ingenuity, perseverance, creativity and teamwork. The FHS community is so proud of you!
