The Sixth Form recently had the pleasure of hearing Sophie Campbell speak. She is a blue badge guide of London and a journalist who spoke to us about London’s history. This ranged from talking about the monarchy to an average Londoners’ day. Although she spoke about the past, she encouraged us to look at the future of London.

Notably, she spoke about Covent Garden and its history from being home to the members of the aristocracy to the shopping extraordinaire it is today. In addition, it is home to architecture that remains from when it was built,  depicted by the apple store.  Another home of wonderful architecture is the curved buildings of Regent’s Street.

Interestingly, the infamous O2 Arena was a failure when built and was sold for only £1 but is now one of the most profitable venues in London today.  She also mentioned the relatively recent unveiling of Millicent Fawcett, an infamous suffragist often shadowed by the Pankhursts. Overall, a very eye-opening lecture on the city we call home.
