The Sixth Form gave a rapturous welcome back to Dr de Bono for her fascinating Black History Month lecture.
She began with a description of the horrific conditions of the slave ships and detailed just how lacking the official definition of a slave actually is. The rights that slave owners, having spent $40,000 on their slave, felt they were able to assume over them were shocking, including their continual rights over the children of their slaves too.
Dr de Bono then expanded her talk to include modern slavery, affecting all ages and sexes in our world today, people forced to work in all sorts of professions, having their passports confiscated and unable to free themselves. It was an eye opener that it costs a lot less to buy a slave these days than in the time of the plantation owners.
Thank you to Dr de Bono for her excellent talk, and the reading list and fact sheet she provided with details of how to help if you feel someone needs help to escape from slavery. We are looking forward to welcoming Dr de Bono back in the Spring term.
