Physics Trip to NASA

Twelve pupils from the UV – LVI competed in an International Space Science competition at the Johnson Space Centre in Houston, Texas over half term. They completed a number of tasks including the construction of a rocket and a Mars rover, undertook a NASA diving course, the design and presentation of a Mars habitat, programming a robot and made a thermal heat shield along with a cryogenic astronaunt’s glove. The girls also had lunch with Astronaut Rick Hieb, a veteran astronaut who has undertaken three tours to the International Space Station and was part of the three person spacewalk mission to fix a satellite. Other highlights included boarding a NASA space shuttle and viewing the actual Apollo 11 command module on loan from the Smithsonian museum in Washington.

FHS team retains the NASA International Space competition title

Isabel Klug and Tara Murray were part of the overall winning team and they also gained prizes for winning the Rocket, Coding, Robotics competitions and came third in the Thermotile testing. Emma Nygren and Yasmeen Siddiqui gained Second Prize overall with medals for building a Mars Habitat and Coding, Robotics and Cryogenics competitions. In third place were Lorna Sibsion and Yasmeen Siddqui gaining five medals for Rockets, Mars Habitat, Coding competitions and Thermotile and Cryogenics testing.
