Following their end-of-year exams, the Lower Fourth participated in a range of activities designed to bolster their financial literacy and skills.
On Wednesday, they visited the ‘Future of Money’ exhibition at the Bank of England, where they delved into the bank’s rich history, grappled with the concept of inflation, and explored the fascinating possibilities of a digital currency. Izzy K (Year 8) shared her excitement: “I really enjoyed reading about the chest on the Bank of England trip! It is the oldest piece of furniture on show (I think it was made around 1700) and was used for storing valuables before safes existed. I really appreciated the opportunity to learn more about finances!”
To consolidate their newfound knowledge and make connections, students spent Thursday morning engaging in mathematical activities. Their Maths teachers expertly linked the exhibition to current topics such as divisibility rules, calculating percentages, and sampling methods. The afternoon was equally enriching, as facilitators from HSBC guided them through crucial lessons on staying safe online, recognising money mules, savvy shopping, and understanding the psychology of advertising and the buying cycle.
Friday brought a wave of creativity, entrepreneurial spirit and teamwork. Students collaborated with 8billionideas on the City Changers challenge, where they designed, built, and presented their visions for a sustainable city. It was a joy to witness students deeply engaged in their activities, asking insightful questions about the economy and sustainability.
Well done, Lower Fourth! The enthusiasm and commitment you showed throughout these activities were truly inspiring.
