The History Department took twenty one girls from the Lower and Upper Fifth to Berlin over half-term.
We had a fantastic time, packing museums, walking tours and other sites related to Second World War and Cold War into four days of non-stop history! Highlights included; a tour of the Reichstag, with its spectacular central glass dome and graffiti left by Soviet soldiers in 1945; a walking tour of the Berlin Wall, and a visit to the famous Checkpoint Charlie Museum, full of fascinating artefacts and stories related to the numerous escapes from East Berlin; a mornings trip to see Sachsenhausen concentration camp will always remain with us. However, we had a lot of fun traveling around the city on the underground system and we loved the numerous coffees and hot chocolates to stave off the chilly wind and rest our aching feet. We got to know Berlin very well during our short visit and learned a great deal about its eventful, yet tragic, history.
