On Wednesday 22nd March we held our annual Higher Education Evening for all the Lower Sixth students and their parents. This event marks the first stage of the higher education journey. Students and parents learned about various higher education options, asked questions of university representatives, and received advice about how to start thinking about where and what they wish to study when they leave school.
There were specialist sessions on: STEM applications, overseas applications, drama schools and art schools, Oxbridge applications and degree apprenticeships. The main presentation included a Q & A panel with three panellists from the Universities of Bath and Exeter, as well from Imperial College, London.
Key messages were for students to start their research now, to use Unifrog to browse courses and explore their options, and to take advantage of the summer holiday by developing their subject knowledge and vising universities. Students were advised to keep a journal in preparation for writing their Personal Statements in the summer holiday, in which they record experiences and activities, including extra and super-curricular events and any reading material.
Our next higher education event will be on Friday 9th June, the Higher Education Day, where all LVIth will be off timetable, listening to professional advice and pooling initial ideas for the Personal Statement as well as registering with UCAS online and beginning to complete their application forms.
Many thanks to the visiting speakers, the teachers who contributed to the event, and to the current and former FHS students who gave up their time to help with the event.
