We are delighted to announce that we have been awarded a prestigious Green Flag 2023-2024 accreditation by Eco-Schools. This is in recognition of our ongoing dedication to environmental education and action led by our vibrant Eco Society, who encourage a whole-school approach through various eco initiatives.

In awarding our Green Flag accreditation, Eco-School’s judging panel praised our Eco Society’s remarkable commitment to encouraging their fellow students to get involved. They also recognised the opportunities for leadership and development on offer to students within Eco Society, with specific responsibilities delegated among members to encourage ownership, collaboration and upskilling. A key position on our Head Girl’s Team is also the Environmental Captain, who plays a central role in the Eco Society and acts as the main liaison between students and staff on environmental matters.

Eco-Schools also praised our Environmental Review, which was led by the Eco Society and took place this academic year. During the review, our Eco Society members and Eco Reps tackled challenging questions by consulting experts within the school, including the Facilities Team and Accent Catering staff. The review highlighted the school’s current environmental standing, strengths and areas for improvement, forming the basis for their Action Plan. The Action Plan focused on achievable goals in low-scoring areas, with numerous activities designed to engage the entire school community via student newspapers, assemblies, digital noticeboards and social media. We are looking forward to the Eco Committee continuing this work next year as they continue to promote sustainability and environmental awareness within our Francis Holland community.

Our wider curriculum efforts were also recognised by Eco-Schools, reflecting our commitment to offering a ‘schooling for life’ to all students. The judging panel noted specific areas of strength with regards to integrating environmental topics throughout the curriculum, with diverse lessons spanning various subjects and age groups.

We would like to thank Eco-Schools for recognising the work of our Eco Society, our Eco Reps, our students and our staff in promoting a whole-school focus on sustainability and making a difference.
