All this week was Classics Week at Francis Holland Regent’s Park, which had a range of events, ranging from the annual Classics Symposium to a Mythical Monsters Kahoot and Cake events.
About 180 students and teachers from schools all over London and the South-East attended the Francis Holland Classics Symposium on Monda. Among those attending were pupils from St Marylebone School, Westminster School, St Paul’s Boys’ School and Dr Challoner’s High School.
Professor Robin Osborne’s talk, ‘How Athenian Drama Related to Athenian Life’, provoked lots of interesting questions and was particularly relevant to students taking the Greek Theatre paper for A Level Classical Civilisation. Professor Carrie Vout then spoke about ‘Love, Sex and Relationships in Greek and Roman Art’, an eye-opening talk with some rarely-seen artworks from the ancient world.
The two Professors, both of Cambridge University, both stayed to answer questions about their talks and about studying Classics as a degree.
This is the third time FHS has hosted the annual Classics Symposium, which has grown in popularity every year.
On Tuesday, students in the LV and above were invited to cupcakes in the Classics centre at break to celebrate three years since the opening of the dedicated Classics centre.
The Classics Department hosted a Classics Kahoot and Cake event on Wednesday lunchtime. Among the tricky questions were the Latin names for different tube stations and the tweets of different mythological characters.
