On Wednesday 27th January, we joined together to mark Holocaust Memorial Day, and reflected on this year’s theme: Be the light in the darkness.
Although we were not able to meet together for our usual assembly, each year group came together and shared materials from the Holocaust Memorial Day trust – in tutor time or in a year group assembly.
According to an annual You Gov poll, Anti- Semitic views are declining in the UK but there are still worrying trends and views heldĀ (See article).Ā Genocide is still happening in China and Burma, with conflict in Darfur resuming since the UN African forces withdrew recently.
To mark Holocaust Memorial Day this year, national landmarks in the UK were bathed in purple light, marking 76 years to the day since Auschwitz was liberated. Wembley Stadium, Cardiff Castle and the Tyne Bridge were among the structures lit at 8pm following an hour-long online remembrance ceremony.
Holocaust Memorial Day enables us to remember ā for a purpose. It gives us a responsibility to work for a safer, better future for everyone. Everyone can step up and use their talents to tackle prejudice, discrimination and intolerance wherever we encounter them.
