On Monday 16th May, hostage negotiator Suzanne Williams came to talk at FHS as part of our Academic Enrichment Lecture series.
Williams told us a few of her many tales of dangerous and risky negotiations, from negotiating with terrorists and murderers, to drafting up kidnapping plans for Buckingham Palace, to using £10 of chips as a negotiation tactic.
For me, the highlight of the speech was when Williams shared her top three negotiation tactics:
- Seeing things from the other person’s point of view
- Empathising
- Engaging in active listening. We have two ears and one mouth for a reason!
I’ll be using these tips every day!
