As the Summer Term commenced, instead of heading back to school our Lower Fifth GCSE Geography students jumped on a coach and headed up to the Lake District for an action-packed week of fieldwork with the Field Studies Council! Basking in the glorious Lakes sunshine, they have enjoyed a fabulous week putting their geography skills to action. Overall, they have all had a fantastic time and are looking forward to discussing their findings back in the classroom next week! Here’s what the students had to say about the trip…

This week we went to Castle Head in the Lake District for our Geography trip. Although the coach trip was 5 hours there and back it was well worth it for the learning experience and fun memories.

We went on research a trip to River Eea to investigate the width, depth, and velocity of the river. This showed us how to collect and analyse data. After a brief lunch, we headed to some sand dunes where we learned how to measure slope profiles and recorded the different sand and vegetation types.

The next day we went to the village of Lindale and the town of Bowness to conduct environmental impact surveys and compare the two settlements. A particular highlight was getting the chance to interview the locals and tourists in Bowness and asking their opinions on the bustling lakeside town. On this sunny day we were also lucky to climb Orrest Head and eat lunch with the beautiful view of Windemere from the top.

The trip was only improved by the cheerful and friendly attitudes of the Castle Head staff, who were always happy to help us in our times of need, such as getting stuck in a shower, or putting up with the noise on the last night from our impromptu disco in the common room.

Overall, this trip was a fantastic experience which none of us will ever forget.
