Art

Every pupil is capable of achieving success in this subject. By offering a wide range of ideas, materials and processes, we work hard to engage all our students in what we believe to be a centrally important and very exciting component of education.

We aim to develop your daughter’s enjoyment, confidence and independence in Art and Design, so that they are at the centre of the creative process. This is of course a gradual process of building skills and developing understanding, through structured schemes of work that are continually widening the breadth of personal choice as your daughter progresses through the school.

The Department is comprised of five committed and highly experienced members of staff, who teach across all disciplines offered within the Department, supported by our specialist technicians.

Curriculum

Curriculum

Art is a visual subject that requires students to really look at the world.

Drawing from observation is not only an important way of exploring and understanding the visual world, but also a means of bringing visual content into creative work, alongside of photography and collected visual research. Looking and thinking about artists' work is an essential part of teaching in the department.

Girls are encouraged to have the confidence to engage with contemporary ideas in making art and form their own personal response to the work looked at.

In the first three years all girls will have had opportunity to work with painting, sculpture, mixed-media and printmaking. These core disciplines are then taken further though GCSE and A Level, with the added possibility of working with digital photography, video and textiles.

By the second year of the GCSE course (Edexcel Art and Design Fine Art) students are working on fully independent projects where they are able to respond to a given theme through their own selected medium, following their own research and ideas.

The A level course starts with a short introductory project and workshops based on a given theme, which are designed to extend and broaden students' working practices. This leads into independent work taking that thematic further into a resolved body of work. This gives our students the confidence and skills to tackle the Thematic External Examination. By the final year of their Sixth Form we see our students as self directing young artists, who time and time again flourish in the challenge and responsibility of their own work.

Beyond the Classroom

Beyond the Classroom

Throughout the week, we offer clubs and workshops for girls in all years, including; Pottery and Life Drawing on two nights each week in the Winter Term and early Spring Term for the Upper School. Regular trips to galleries are organised for all year groups with the upper school making additional visits independently.

Further extra-curricular clubs include: Junior and Senior Art Club, Photography Club and Mosaic Community Art Project.

Trips, Workshops and Events

LV Art trip to Tate Britain

The Lower Fifth GCSE art students visited Tate Britain for a special introductory talk, followed by a tour looking at specific works within the gallery collection and some practical tasks which challenged their creative powers. This was an inspiring start to the girls’ coursework this term.

LVI trip to Margate

The LVI art students took the train to Margate for the first leg of their coursework project, ‘Journeys’. The town was of particular interest, home of the Turner Contemporary and Tracy Emin, and many distinctive seaside features including the delightful ‘Dreamland’, a renovated vintage fairground. The girls gathered a rich source of ideas and visual imagery for their practical work, as well as enjoying the bracing sea air!

Sixth Form Art Workshop

Sixth Form art students were joined by several intrepid Upper Fifth to participate in an inspiring drawing workshop, led by Royal Academy artist and experienced teacher, Jeanette Barnes. Many of the girls were familiar with her drawings of the urban environment, although perhaps not quite ready for the pace and intensity of the exciting day!

Practise what you know, and it will help to make clear what now you do not know.
