Charity & Community

Charity & Community

At Regent's Park we have the following charity and community links:

Francis Holland Summer Camp

FHS Summer Camp is a unique charitable partnership between the School and Westminster Social Services, which has gone from strength to strength since it’s foundation in 2006. FHS Sixth Form students and staff give up their time to take on holiday ‘looked after’ children from Westminster Borough. Each summer holiday 15 of our own students are chosen to spend a week at Sayers Croft in Surrey, mentoring and enjoying a range of outward bound activities with children who have very different lives from their own. We are looking forward to celebrating the 10th Anniversary of this charitable partnership in the summer 2016

St John’s Wood Neighbourhood Care

FHS arranges two different kinds of activity with this organisation.

The LVI visit the local elderly in pairs on a weekly basis usually after school and stay for an hour. This is often so successful on both sides that the girls continue to see their old person in the Upper sixth - and even beyond!

We have been making a mosaic with some of the elderly for the last seven years with the help of the Art Department and about eight LVI students. The Mosaic Club meets in the Gloucester Room once a week for tea and mosaic making. They are current working on a mosaic for Chelsea and Westminster hospital.

Links with Local Schools

Sixth Form volunteers work with local primary and nursery schools such as New Pin, with which we have a long established link

St. Edward’s, St. George’s and St. Christina’s Primary schools all make good use of our swimming pool. St. Edward’s and St. George’s on a weekly basis and St. Christina’s for swimming galas.

Sixth Form students also volunteer at the Swiss Cottage Specialist School working with young people with serve special needs. LV are also fund raising for this school and hope to hold a party for students in the Spring Term. There has been a longstanding link with the Jack Taylor School which has since merged with this school.

Volunteering in the local community

Volunteering in the local community at is part of the core principles of the Sixth Form at FHS. Sixth Form pupils are encouraged to seek their own placements developing upon their own strengths and interest for example volunteering in homework clubs in local libraries, or with local schools such as Swiss Cottage Specialist School. Many of our students choose to visit elderly people who are housebound.

Other examples of current voluntary work:

  • Mentoring in an Arabic school
  • Volunteering in charity shops such as Sue Ryder, Oxfam and Mary’s Living and Giving
  • Rotary Club of Hampstead
  • Marie Curie Daffodil appeal
  • Carol singing at the Butterworth Centre

The Challenge Network

The Challenge is national charity which offers an intense three-part, primarily residential programme for 15-17 year olds with the aim to develop a combination of skills including leadership, teamwork and community engagement through residential activities at outdoor activity centers and social action projects. The programme begins in the summer with various start dates available and is then completed in the autumn.

The Challenge Network is the leading provider of the Cabinet Office’s National Citizen Service youth initiative.

Links with Schools and Children’s Centres Overseas

Rainbow Centre, Sri Lanka

The Rainbow Centre was established by a FHS parent and works to enable children to break free from a cycle of poverty that would otherwise trap them in a world of crime, begging, addiction and abuse. It provides welfare, education, medical assistance and nutritious food to children who live on the street, in slum housing and in conditions that threaten their survival. These are the young victims of crime, drug abuse and prostitution. In this area there is no other facility to which these children can turn. FHS pupils and parents have raised money for the center in various ways, and groups of staff, pupils and parents have visited the center to provide hands-on support. The School’s most recent trip was during the autumn half term of 2015.

St. Amedeus School, in Tanzania

FHS is proud of its links with St Amedeus School in Moshi, Tanzania, which FHS has supported since the school’s inception in 2007.

FHS pupils and parents have raised money for the Tanzanian school in various ways, and groups of staff and girls have visited the school to provide hands-on support from teaching, to painting and decorating the classrooms.

The project is not simply about raising money, but about working to give young people greater access to education.
